Extremely High E. coli Levels Detected in Danestream Milford-on-Sea
Last weekend’s water testing by New Forest Water Watch’s Milford on Sea group, the Danestream Dippers, revealed worryingly high levels of E. coli in the river.
Our results showed 91,000 CFU per 100 ml, with a replicate sample exceeding 100,000 CFU per 100 ml. These are exceptionally elevated readings and indicate significant faecal contamination.
Where were the highest levels found?
The most dangerous levels were detected near the river cliff/rope swing area close to the entrance to the boardwalk. This is a well-used spot, particularly by children playing in the water and dogs entering the river, which makes these findings especially concerning.
Why this matters
E. coli is used as an indicator of faecal contamination. At the levels recorded, there is a genuine risk of illness for anyone coming into contact with the water, especially where there is a chance of accidental ingestion. Children are particularly vulnerable in this respect.
These are not marginal exceedances—they are extremely high readings that demand attention.
Reporting and next steps
We have informed the Environment Agency, although we have not yet received a response.
We have also notified New Forest District Council (NFDC) and the local Parish Council so that they are aware of the situation and can take appropriate action.
Ongoing monitoring
As part of New Forest Water Watch’s ongoing water quality monitoring work, our wonderful Milford on Sea volunteers will continue to sample and monitor this site, helping to build a clearer picture of water quality over time.
A wider issue
Findings like these reinforce growing concerns about the condition of our local rivers. New Forest Water Watch’s consistent, careful monitoring is essential to ensure that serious issues like this are identified, understood, and are ultimately addressed
