New Forest Water Watch – April Monitoring Update

Our coordinated testing round two weeks ago saw around 75% of groups take part, with most carrying out a full set of nitrate, phosphate and E. coli tests. This represents a strong step forward in both coverage and data quality.

Across much of the New Forest, results were very encouraging. Many streams showed low nutrient levels and minimal bacterial contamination, confirming that large areas remain in excellent condition.

However, a cluster of issues was identified in the New Milton–Bransgore area. Elevated E. coli levels were recorded at Becton Bunny at Barton, the headwaters of the Danestream at Ashley, a small brook in Bransgore, and the River Mude. Most concerning was Walkford Brook, which follows Chewton Bunny, where E. coli reached 18,000 CFU per 100 ml. This level of contamination warrants further investigation and suggests a significant localised input. As a result, we are looking to increase volunteer coverage in the New Milton–Bransgore area to help track this more closely.

We also have more testing kits on order, which will allow us to expand coverage and maintain momentum.
