Raw sewage is being poured into our rivers and seas every day. And the government isn't legally required to do anything about it. How utterly crap is that?
Sewage was poured into our rivers for more than 440,000 hours in 2023. A trip to the seaside is now more likely to serve up a stench of sewage rather than the nostalgic waft of paper-wrapped chips. And there's a higher chance of spotting brown foam on a riverside walk, instead of otters and kingfishers. And the government isn't legally required to do anything about it. How utterly crap is that?
Hordle Cliff and Milford-on-Sea beaches have had ‘Do not swim’ warning notices this week as a result of Southern Water’s discharges. See photo. Shockingly, current laws, monitoring and regulation are too lax, and mean water companies like this, and factory farms can get away with polluting our rivers and seas.
Whether it’s safe beaches or clean air, we all deserve to live in a healthy environment. That's why Friends of the Earth are building the biggest ever public record of support for enshrining our right to a healthy environment in law.
